Christmas comes at the darkest time of the year, when the days are short and the winter nights draw in. Through the millennia, our ancestors have marked this as a special time in the calendar, when rites and rituals often focus on light, reflecting our strong desire for the return of longer days. Christmas, with its bright lights, its candles, and our hopes for the New Year, is a relatively recent expression of the same emotions, as well as an important festival in the Christian tradition. 

Our Christmas stamps this year capture both the festive traditions which bring us joy and the importance of light: joy in the form of precious time with the people we care for and the treasured memories of celebrations past - and light bursting through winter with the shimmering ornaments and bright lights we use to adorn our homes and public spaces.

At Christmas, our shared customs and traditions bring us closer to those who  matter to us most, and connect us to people the world over, for whom this is also a time  for friendship and togetherness.
