National Stamp (Europa: Underwater Flora and Fauna)
Free delivery to Republic of Ireland
EUROPA stamps have been issued by An Post annually since the early 1960s, in conjunction with other European Post Offices. The Pan-European administration of Post Offices (PostEurop) selects a theme and each country issues two stamps on the topic, consistently among our most sought-after.
For 2024, it is ‘Underwater Flora and Fauna’. These stamps issue on 6th June, ahead of World Oceans Day on 8th June.
This ‘N’ national rate stamp features Carrageen Moss, an algae that grows in a fan shape, commonly found along the Irish coast, in colours ranging from deep purple to red and yellow. Carrageen Moss has been an important food, fertilizer, and medicinal comestible for centuries.
The diatoms featured on the First Day Cover are single-cell species that come in a marvellous diversity of forms, and create about 25% of the oxygen in our atmosphere. They symbolise the profound interconnectedness of all life.
