In the lead-up to the feast day of St Brigid and ancient festival day of Imbolc (February 1) we are issuing two special stamps to mark Brigid’s duality as a Catholic saint and a Celtic goddess.

Brigid was known as a triple goddess in Celtic Tuatha Dé Danann mythology. However, she was one of the few pagan figures to endure when Christianity came to Ireland, and became one of the country’s three patron saints.

Watch out for the distinctive features associated with Brigid’s dual affiliations that are prominently displayed on our stamps. The ‘W’ denomination stamp for the goddess Brigid is titled ‘Imbolc’, linking to her ancient festival day. Fire symbolises her divine transformational, creative and healing powers. A cross made from rushes celebrates Saint Brigid on the on the ‘N’ stamp. Reputedly, she used such a cross in a death-bed conversion of a pagan chieftain. Both stamps are available in sheets of four.

What better way to communicate with family and friends at Spring time than to send a card or letter adorned with these colourful stamps honouring one of Ireland’s most iconic figures.
