2017 An Post/INTO Handwriting Competition - Winning Students have the Write Stuff

The An Post/INTO Handwriting Competition asked children to put their best handwriting on show. The competition has made a big impact on schools this year with over 50,000 children putting their handwriting skills to the test.
Primary school pupils used resources from the GPO Witness History Visitor Centre to tell stories of what life was like for childre in the early 1900s.
An Post’s new definitive stamp issue ‘The history of Ireland through its objects’ tested the handwriting skills of secondary school students. The stamp issue allowed students to explore the lives of our ancestors in ancient Ireland. Using a mobile app, students could scan the stamps to get more information online, about the historic objects.
Students were also asked to suggest what objects would work as stamp topic in the year 2067, reflecting life in Ireland in 2017. Not surprisingly mobile phones and apps topped the suggestion list but notable sporting achievements, the environment and social issues also featured.
An Post/INTO Handwriting Competition is hosted on anpostschoolbag.ie which has become a leading online resource for teachers and schoolchildren. The website offers activities, lesson plans, video and role play options which are curriculum linked to tell the story of the post office, its business, history and staff.

We use real world examples of living and working in Ireland to help students improve literacy and numeracy in a fun way. An Post/INTO Handwriting Competition is a great example of working with teachers and children to improve skills and to add excitement and interest for everyone, while doing that.”
INTO President Rosena Jordan said “This competition shows the art and skill of handwriting is flourishing in Ireland. INTO has a long association with the teaching of handwriting, our first President, Vere Foster, developed copy books to improve handwriting. This competition is a wonderful celebration of the work of children and their teachers. It’s great to see teachers and parents across the country encouraging their students and children to enter this competition and ultimately ensure they have good handwriting as they move into adult life”.
