AIB Banking at the Post Office
21 October 2002
Staff training and the installation and alignment of new computer equipment will be completed at the remaining offices over the coming weeks.
In all a total of 1,700 personal identity numbers (PIN) pads will be installed at post offices counters to enable AIB customers to conduct their business by keying in their personal number.
By the middle of November all 1,000 automated post offices will be providing the range of deposit, withdrawal, VISA payment and business deposit services for AIB customers.
The communications infrastructure, linking Post Offices with AIB centrally, ensures customers receive the same transaction service as if they transacted at an AIB branch. The transaction remains totally confidential.
The business partnership is a spectacular boost for the post offices network and follows the announcement last year of the new business link-up between An Post and AIB.
Mr Dermot Ahern was at Carlingford Post Office, the latest in Co Louth to be readied to provide the new services for AIB customers.
The Minister was welcomed by sub postmaster Mr John O’Hanlon, and accompanied by An Post chief executive Mr John Hynes and Mr Eamonn Ryan, managing director of Post Offices division.
Mr Ahern said “I welcome the link up between An Post and AIB to provide a service which will extend choice for customers and add enormously to the level of transactions taking place in post offices.”
He added “This government is committed to the post office network and in adding value to the post offices. In partnership with An Post we are endeavouring to expand the range of services and facilities available through the network building on the excellent reputation the service enjoys.
“The first tranche of offices offering banking services illustrates what a valuable facility the network offers, “ Minister Ahern said.
