An Post marks 400th Anniversary of Kilkenny City Status

In 1609, Kilkenny was granted city status by Royal Charter of King James 1 of England.  Known as the Marble City, Kilkenny is Ireland’s smallest city, both geographically and in terms of population and is famous for its medieval buildings. 

Since its upgrade to city status in 1609 Kilkenny had had a rich and varied history and remains a vibrant commercial and tourist centre, renowned for its friendliness and sporting prowess.  
 

Key dates in Kilkenny’s history:  

• 1650 - Oliver Cromwell paid a visit with the aim of suppressing nationalist extremism. 
• 1798 - After a failed rebellion, Kilkenny was placed under martial law for a brief period. 
• 1922 - Anti-Treaty forces take over Kilkenny Castle, but surrendered two days later.
