Animal Magic at An Post
8 May 2002
Described in their Irish form the Grainneog (€1 denomination); Broc (41c), Dobharchu (50c) and Iora Rua (57c) are part of a highly popular series which has been issued annually since 1978.
The stamps which show the animals in their natural native habitat have been designed in full colour by Cork artist Finbarr O’Connor who also designed the first day cover.
Featuring the leveret and the hare, the first day cover is colourful and attractive.
The Badger is a very powerful animal. They mostly rummage around in the dark especially throughout woodlands here.
The shy Red Squirrel is quite widespread in Ireland. One of our prettiest creatures it has a brick red fur and bushy tail.
The Hedgehog has a spine covered dumpy body, pointed face and rather innocent demeanour. Gardners greatly appreciates the hedgehogs appetite!
The Otter, alternatively known as Madra Uisce is quite common in Irelands rivers. It has featured in the illuminations and poetry of the early Christian Ireland.
The stamps are available from most post offices. A first day cover is available from the Philatelic Bureau on 01 705 7400 or on the website at www.irishstamps.ie .
