Brian Boru stamps celebrate 1000th anniversary

9 July 2002

This year marks the 1000th anniversary of Brian BorĂº’s High Kingship of Ireland and to mark the occasion An Post has produced a set of four special commemorative stamps.

Artist Finbarr O’Connor’s colourful designs each illustrate a different aspect of Brian BorĂº’s life and kingship:

  • Mounted on horseback, leading his troops into battle (41c);
  • At the head of his Shannon fleet, having recognised the importance of naval strength (44c);
  • Inauguration as ‘Imperator Scotorum’ - High King of Ireland (57c) and
  • Decreeing Armagh as the Primacy of the Irish Church (?1).
The new stamps and a First Day Cover may be ordered from the Philatelic Bureau, GPO, Dublin – Tel: (01) 705 7400 or on-line at www.irishstamps.ie
