Celebrating the changing face of modern Ireland
27 September 2013
The stamps were designed by Atelier David Smith and are available, along with an attractive First Day Cover (FDC), at Dublin’s GPO, main post offices or at irishstamps.ie.
The new stamp set show Garda Dongdong Zheng who is Chinese and a member of An Garda Síochána stationed in Swords, Sammy Akorede from Nigeria who is a Luas Revenue Protection Officer, Christian Tshibangu, seen playing hurling, a student at St. Colmcille’s SNS in Knocklyon and Anna Garciaz, who is Polish, and works in Marketing with Permanent TSB.
The Census of 2011 indicted that there are almost 600,000 non-Irish nationals living in the country. Indeed since the introduction of citizenship by the Department of Justice in 2011 just over 30,000 of these new Irish have been conferred with Irish citizenship.
This influx of migrants has helped shape a more socially and culturally diverse society and along the way transformed Ireland into a more inclusive multicultural nation.
