The Ox is one of 12 animals to appear in the Chinese Zodiac and is believed to signify prosperity through its strength and hard work. People born in a year of the Ox – including Barack Obama, Daniel O’Donnell, U2’s Larry Mullen and The Edge, Tom Crean and Enya - are said to be intelligent; born leaders; possessing the ability to accomplish great things; extremely patient; determined in their work and logically minded. People born in this sign are also said to be caring, kind and truthful.
Previous years of the Ox include: 1937, 1949, 1961, 1973, 1985, and 1997.
2009 marks the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Ireland and China. China’s economy has been developing rapidly in recent years as it steadily increases its influence in global markets. The number of Chinese people living in Ireland is now estimated at approximately 100,000.
Dublin City Council is running a programme of events to celebrate the Chinese New Year, including interactive art workshops, a well-being marquee; authentic Chinese performances and the carnival at Wolfe Tone Street in Dublin City.
