Ireland’s Schools are Out of This World

19 February 2009

An Post and Astronomy Ireland are working together to spark school children’s imaginations by asking classes to create stories with astronomy and space as their theme.

An Post Chief Executive, Donal Connell says “An Post is supporting literacy through the pleasure of storytelling and this is a great topic, there is so much to learn and discover about the universe.” “By participating in our What’s the Story? Challenge, primary school children can let their imaginations blast off, have fun and go on their own voyage of discovery during International Year of Astronomy.”

Astronomy Ireland is the national astronomy club for Ireland and Chairman David Moore is encouraging everyone to participate in their nationwide activities celebrating International Year of Astronomy.

“The next night sky event, ‘Venus Watch’ will be visible in our skies until the end of February and can be seen with the naked eye” says David, “Venus coupled with our nearest neighbour in space, the Moon, will make for a most exciting night's viewing.”

An Post has already posted What’s the Story? Challenge resource packs to every primary school in Ireland. Additional packs are available from An Post by phoning 01-705 8400 or, for more information visit www.anpost.ie/educationawards.
