Lick Your Own Stamp

Every year An Post invites members of the public to suggest interesting topics for the country’s stamp issues. An Post is extending this invitation to the public once again in 2008. Throughout January An Post is accepting stamp suggestion topics to feature in the 2010 stamp collection.

Perhaps there is an event, from the past or in the future, that merits commemoration. Maybe there’s an anniversary, a person or an aspect of Irish life that deserves celebrating. Whatever topic members of the public choose to submit, An Post would like their suggestions before the end of January, 2008.

An acknowledgement will be sent to everyone who submits a suggestion and all suggestions will be considered by the Philatelic Advisory Committee (PAC).

It is expected that the Stamp Programme for 2010 will be approved by the Government in early 2009 at which time a further communication will be sent to everyone who submitted a suggestion.
 

Notes to the Editor

Each year An Post produces on behalf of the Irish Government, a programme of special and commemorative stamps. The programme comprises of around 40 such stamps covering up to 20 different topics.

All suggestions received for special and commemorative stamps are vetted by an independent committee, the Philatelic Advisory Committee (PAC), which recommends the subjects for inclusion in the programme. Following ratification of these recommendations by the Board of An Post, they are forwarded to the Government for final approval.

In arriving at recommendations for inclusion in the Programme, the PAC place particular emphasis on subjects which meet the following criteria

• Anniversaries and commemorations of national and international importance. Preference is for significant anniversaries e.g. 50th, 100th or 200th.
• Contributions by Irish people to international affairs.
• Noteworthy aspects of Ireland, its life, country and people.
• Suitability of the subject for depiction as a stamp.
