Lost in Translation – An Post Secondary Schools Awards 2009

This year’s Lost in Translation Challenge introduced secondary school students to the Irish Sign Language alphabet and asked them to translate some basic words in to English. There were eight winners representing the junior and senior cycle from four regions.
The theme of this year’s challenge was chosen as part of An Post’s Literacy Programme and coincides with this summer’s Deaflympics which will take place in Taipei in Taiwan. Deaflympic Waterpolo team captain Paul Ryder, nd his team mates were presented with a billboard of messages from the eight winners, representing the 8,000 similar messages from secondary school students around the country.
Each winner collected a cheque for €300, a cheque for €500 and a trophy for their school and €200 One4All gift vouchers for both their teacher and school Principal. The winners were chosen from 8,000 entries.
The regional winners in the junior cycle are:
- East: Aaron Byrne from Arklow Community College, Arklow, Co. Wicklow
- West: Nuala Cawley from Sacred Heart School, Westport, Co. Mayo
- South: Emma O’Donoghue from Coláiste Iosaef, Kilmallock, Co. Limerick
- Dublin: Mark Byrne from Greenhills College, Greenhills, Dublin 12
The regional winners in the senior cycle are:
- East: Denise Burtenshaw from Sacred Heart Secondary School, Drogheda, Co. Louth
- West: Richard Keaney from St. Gerald’s College, Castlebar, Co. Mayo
- South: Caoimhe McGuane from St. Mary’s Secondary School, Mallow, Co. Cork
- Dublin: Eilish Stafford from Mount Sackville Secondary School, Chapelizod, Dublin 20
