Love story celebrates master of miniature
26 August 2010
The event is the launch of a stamp celebrating the life and work of Czeslaw Slania considered the world’s most famous engraver and stamp designer. The stamp is being jointly issued with the Swedish Post office.
Slania, born in Poland in 1921, settled in Sweden in the 1950’s and produced stamps for postal authorities in 28 countries all over the world. The stamp, launched today, is one of Czeslaw Slania’s own favourites and depicts a ballet scene from ‘Romeo and Juliet’. He has been honoured not only for the sheer number of items he has produced but also the beauty of his work. Slania once earned himself a place in the Guinness Book of records as the world’s most prominent and prolific stamp designer.
The stamp and First Day Cover are available from main Post Offices, online at www.irishstamps.ie or at the Philatelic Shop, GPO. The First Day Cover will feature both the 55c Irish stamp and its 12Kr Swedish equivalent.
