New 48c stamp marks University Church 150th anniversary
24 May 2006
University Church is a peaceful oasis on St Stephen’s Green which has been favoured by Dubliners since its consecration in 1856. Designed by architect John Hungerford Pollen under the direct instruction of John Henry Newman (later to be ordained Cardinal Newman), to recreate the interior in the Byzantine style, as opposed to the Gothic style which was much favoured at the time.
The stamp features a most enchanting and evocative painting of the church interior by Tom Ryan RHA, one of Ireland’s most celebrated artists.
Speaking at the event, Minister McDowell said that he was pleased to launch the commemorative stamp and to be associated with the 150th Anniversary of the Newman University Church: “The University Church, which I have a lifelong affection for myself as I was baptised, received my first Holy Communion and was married in the Church, is more than a beautiful building with a long and rich history; it is a place of celebration, reflection and worship; a place of memories for many, both sad and joyous. This stamp will reach many people and remind them of the role the Newman University Church has played in the lives of so many since 1856,” he said
An Post Chairperson, Margaret McGinley said that the a commemorative stamp was an appropriate way to commemorate Newman’s vision and determination.
“He succeeded, in the most difficult of times and locations in founding both the seat of learning that was to evolve into University College Dublin and a church that was set to remain as a working, living city church much loved and admired by so many Irish people,” she commented.
