New GAA Hall of Fame Inductees
25 September 2002
The new inductees are footballers Peter McDermott of Meath and Matt Connor (Offaly) with hurlers Seanie Duggan of Galway and Jimmy Smyth of Clare.
They join the thirty players chosen on the An Post/GAA Hurling and Football Teams of the Millennium and the four inductees named in 2001.
The 2002 nominees are amongst the great names in hurling and football. Duggan and Smyth never won an All-Ireland medal and are the first such players to be honoured.
McDermott won two championship medals with Meath and was also a noted referee. Connor was one of the greatest players of the 1980 before being seriously injured in a road accident.
Images of the new inductees, chosen by a panel of journalists and former Presidents of Cuman Luth Chleas Gael, will go on permanent display on the level three concourse at Croke Park.
All four stamps which are priced at 41 cent and designed by FOR Design, are on sale in all post offices. They show contemporary images of the players in their county strip against the background of the new Croke Park.
The portraits on which the images are based were executed by Cork artist Finbarr O’Connor. A special first day cover has been issued. The new stamps and a First Day Cover may be ordered from the Philatelic Bureau, GPO, Dublin – Tel: (01) 705 7400 or on-line at www.irishstamps.ie
