New Stamps for Camogie Centenary & 2004 Olympics

22 July 2004

The 48c stamps show players in the original and modern playing kit and from Antrim, Cork, Dublin, and Kilkenny - counties which have been significant in the growth and development of this most skilful of women’s field games.

Designed by Cork artist Finbarr O’Connor, one stamp bears the Camogie Association centenary logo while the other shows an image of the O’Duffy Cup which is awarded to the All-Ireland senior champions.

A special First Day cover to mark the publication of the stamps shows the centenary logo of the Camogie Association which has organised a calendar of special events to celebrate the centenary.

Two other stamps, marking the return of the Summer Olympic Games to their ancient birthplace in Greece and Athens the city of their revival, also go on sale at main post offices today.

The stamps depict an athlete in a pose of the ancient games (60c) and a modern javelin thrower (48c), both shown against the background of the Olympic torch and connecting rings.

Stamps and First Day Cover for both the Camogie and Olympic issues may be purchased from the Philatelic Shop in the GPO, Dublin; at main Post Offices or online at www.irishstamps.ie.
