Postage rates to increase on July 21

20 June 2014

Friday 20 June, 2014: Following a review of pricing and the approval by ComReg of a new price-cap mechanism, rates for postal services will increase from Monday 21st July, 2014.

The standard domestic letter rate for items up to 100g will increase from 60c to 68c while the standard international letter rate will increase from 90c to €1.00 for items up to 100g.

Despite the increase, An Post’s rates will remain among the lowest in the EU 15 countries including Britain, France, Belgium and Italy, and well below the EU domestic average of 71c (comparison table attached). A wide range of discount options continue to be available to businesses using meter mail, CeadĂșnas licence and bulk-mail services.

In conjunction with An Post’s ongoing cost reduction initiatives and growth of new revenue streams, this increase is necessary to stem the unsustainable financial losses arising from the Company’s Universal Service Obligation – losses totalled €55m in 2013 - whereby customers in all areas of the country are provided with daily collection and delivery services for a uniform tariff.

“Our services continue to offer excellent value for money and these new tariffs will help to ensure the sustainability of our Universal Service Obligation which is essential for Irish businesses of all sizes as well as for our personal customers,”  a spokesperson said.
