Posting advice and Christmas stamps

3 December 2007

For the Republic of Ireland, the latest date for posting for letters and parcels is December 19.

For Britain and Northern Ireland, December 18th is the latest date by which delivery is guaranteed in time for Christmas.

For European destinations the latest deadline is December 9 for parcels and December 18th for letters.

For all parts of the United States, Central and South America, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, India and the Philippines, the standard posting deadline is December 5 for parcels and December 7 for letters/cards.

Additional services including Express and Registered Post are also available. An Post has the following posting advice for customers: Get posting early, and give yourself a chance to enjoy writing your Christmas cards and letters – as much as you enjoy receiving them! Always include your own address details on the front of the envelope or parcel (top left-hand corner) so that the item can be returned to you if, for some reason, it cannot be delivered.

  • Always check the address and the postage so as to avoid having underpaid mail delayed or returned
  • Be sure to seal your envelope - it costs nothing extra Mail going outside the island of Ireland should carry a Priority Mail sticker – available at the Post Office
  • Take time to wrap and pack parcels carefully; it’s a shame when flimsy wrapping comes apart in the post. Use good quality paper and tape.
  • Sharp edges of photographs, cds/dvds and books cut easily through paper, so take the time to wrap them properly.

Booklets of 26 self-adhesive Christmas stamps, including one free stamp, are now on sale at Post Offices and retail outlets priced €13.75, together with traditional gummed stamps at 55c (island of Ireland) and 78c (all other places).

The Christmas stamps were designed by Donegal-based artist Sean Ó Brógáin and show the Adoration of the Shepherds (booklet 55c); the Magi (55c) and the Presentation in the Temple (78c).
