Stamp of Approval for ICA Centenary

Speaking at the launch Mr Connell said that the story of Irish Countrywomen’s Association is, in fact, the story of this island over the past 100 years.  “There is no aspect of Ireland’s economic or social development with which the ICA has not been connected; be that as leaders, drivers, influencers, facilitators and educators and this stamp issue is a fitting tribute to their wonderful work over generations,” he added.

ICA National President Anne Maria Dennison said that the ICA was extremely honoured to have its centenary recognised through the issue of a postage stamp.  “This is one of the key highlights of our centenary calendar this year and our members are looking forward to seeing it adorn their letters and parcels in celebration of the ICA’s many achievements,” she added

Known originally as the United Irishwoman when it started in Bree, Co Wexford in 1910, its first President Anita Lett was a powerful driving force, committed to making life better for the women of rural Ireland.  From the outset their philosophy was based on the belief that the promotion of better ways of rural living and working for women would benefit the whole country.

From 1935 the organisation came to be known as the Irish Countrywomen’s Association and through local guilds its work continued apace in a broad range of areas including most particularly, family health and education.

Today the ICA is by far the largest women’s organisation in Ireland with more than 15,000 members linked to local guilds in every Irish town and village.  There are also several city-based guilds.  It continues to work towards making life better life for women and families all over the country, promoting Irish language and culture and encouraging support and friendship between members through involvement in activities such as sport, drama, arts and crafts.

An Post has produced almost 300,000 of the new stamp for which strong demand is expected from ICA members and supporters across the country.
