Stamp set celebrates Irish Visual arts

30 April 2013

An Post has issued a set of four 60c stamps, designed by Ger Garland, and featuring a number of challenging visual images, including ‘Ghost Ship’, by Cork artist Dorothy Cross, ‘The Fall’, by Amanda Coogan, ‘Smoke Tree’, by John Gerrard and ‘Doors and Sunlight’, by Stephen McKenna.

‘Ghost Ship’ depicts a decommissioned lightship, painted with luminous paint so that it would appear and disappear like the lightships themselves.  Dorothy Cross works in a wide range of media from sculpture and photography to video and installation. ‘The Fall’, shows, Amanda Coogan, one of Ireland’s most inspired performance artists in action.

‘Smoke Tree’ shows a real-time model of an oak tree that uses smoke in place of leaves. John Gerrard is renowned for his use of 3D real-time computer graphics. ‘Doors and Sunlight’ re-defines the various ways space and light influence how we view everyday objects. Stephen McKenna is renowned for his paintings, watercolours and drawings.

The stamps, First Day Cover and handy booklet of all four stamps (€2.40) can be purchased at main Post Offices, the Philatelic Shop at Dublin’s GPO and online at irishstamps.ie.
