Stamp set marks Dáil centenary
1 January 0001
The first meeting of the Dail was held on January 21st in the Mansion House on Dublin’s Dawson street. During a two-hour sitting Dáil members adopted a Constitution and issued a Declaration of independence ratifying the Irish republic which had been declared on Easter Monday 1916. The first stamp in the set features a painting of the first Dáil by Thomas Ryan RHA which now hangs at the entrance to the Dáil chamber in Leinster House. The second stamp carries a representation of that first meeting based on the modern Oireachtas voting system. The stamps and first day cover (FDC) envelope were designed by Workgroup and are available at main post offices, from the stamp counters at the GPO in Dublin and online at irishstamps.ie.
