Stamps kick-off World Cup Campaign

13 May 2002

Legends from the 1990 World Cup Campaign - Packie Bonner, David O’Leary and Paul McGrath – are joined by current star Roy Keane in the “Irish Soccer Heroes” issue which goes on sale at post offices this week.

Bonner, O’Leary and McGrath were central to the Irish adventure at Italia ’90 with Bonner and O’Leary winning acclaim for their penalty shoot-out performances against Romania.

The four are amongst the best known names of the modern game and between them have a total of 287 appearances for their country. Keane is one of the best midfielders in the world game and will captain the Irish team at the finals.

The new stamps were designed by D5 Design and are based on action pictures taken by INPHO. The presentation pack was designed by FOR Design.

The stamps, in a special sheetlet, are in the 41 cent denomination, and the issue is accompanied by a special presentation pack which costs €20 and a 10-stamp presentation booklet (€4.10).

Also available is a souvenir sheet which costs €6.56, a first-day cover (€2.14) and a framed sheetlet and first day cover (€50) which is available from the Philatelic Bureau (01 705 7400) or on the website at www.irishstamps.ie .
